Is there anything more wholesome and comforting than a chocolate chip cookie? I have a random memory of watching Sesame Street episode as a child that showed a girl going to her grandma’s house after school, and they baked chocolate chip cookies together. The sound the spatula made on the cookie sheet when taking the cookies from it sticks in my brain for some reason. The cookies looked delicious, and every time I see a recipe for chocolate chip cookies, the memory flashes through my mind.

At some point as I was growing up, my mom began to make chocolate chip cookie bar. It was a favorite of my brother’s and mine, and I now make it for my family and my kids also love it! I have tweaked the original recipe a bit to my liking, and there are deviations easily made to your own tastes. This is a simple, delicious, comforting recipe that pairs well with a cup of hot coffee or a glass of ice-cold milk!

Delicious Traditional Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar
This recipe is simple: you make a chocolate chip cookie dough and press it into a 9×13 cake pan! Start with creaming the fats and sugars (butter, shortening, sugars, eggs, and vanilla). I then add in the baking soda, baking powder, and salt with the mixer going (you can shut it off before adding them as well). I add in the flour one cup at a time, let it mix, then add in the chocolate chips. If the dough seems very dry, you can add a teaspoon of water to add more moisture.

Press the dough into a prepared cake pan with a rubber spatula, the back of a spoon, or your hands. Bake at 350*F for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges begin to brown. The middle is often still soft at the end but hardens more once the bar cools. Let the bar cool a bit, cut, and enjoy!

Easy Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar Recipe
Makes one 9×13 cake pan of bars
Ingredients
½ c Butter (one stick/8 tablespoons)
½ c Palm Fruit Shortening (or shortening/fat of choice – you can also use all butter)
¾ c Sugar
¾ c Light Brown Sugar
2 Eggs
1 tsp Vanilla
1 c Whole Wheat Flour
1 ¼ c All Purpose Flour
1 tsp Baking Soda
½ tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Nutmeg (optional)
One bag milk chocolate chips
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350*F.
Cream together the butter, shortening, sugars, eggs, and vanilla with a mixer until smooth. Add baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix until combined.
Gradually add in flour. Mix until combined. If dough is too thick or dry, add one teaspoon of water.
Mix in chocolate chips.
Prepare your 9×13 cake pan so the bars won’t stick. Press the dough into the pan, all along the edges and into the corners.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the edges begin to brown. Let cool, then cut to preferred size. Enjoy!
